Silicone Rubbers (HTV & LSR)
CAB-O-SIL® fumed silica provides the mechanical reinforcement that gives silicone rubber its strength properties, while minimizing haze for transparent applications.
Silicone rubber’s broad range of physical properties enable it to be used in virtually every industry, including aerospace, automotive, medical, biotechnology, renewable energy, electronics, building and construction, textiles, oil and gas, personal care and coatings. High temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber and liquid silicone rubber (LSR) possess strong mechanical properties in the elastomer product space for use in compression molding, extrusion and injection molding.
However, even when cross-linked, the silicone polymer network is mechanically weak relative to many other elastomer systems. Our CAB-O-SIL fumed silica is incorporated into the polymer to strengthen the otherwise weak polymer network.
We offer a variety of CAB-O-SIL fumed silica products for HTV and LSR applications. CAB-O-SIL products can be selected to provide the desired blend of mechanical and optical properties at a given loading. In addition to hydrophilic fumed silica, we also offer pre-treated fumed silica, which imparts similar mechanical and optical properties as our hydrophilic fumed silica, but is quicker and easier to process.
Additional products to the ones listed below are also available. Please contact your Cabot representative for further details.

CAB-O-SIL® Fumed Silica Products for HTV
An untreated fumed silica with versatility, suggested for use in adhesives and sealants, coatings, cosmetics, foods, inks and pharmaceuticals applications.
A medium surface area fumed silica in which its bulk density has been mechanically increased for faster incorporation and ease of handling.
CAB-O-SIL® Fumed Silica Products for LSR
A high surface area fumed silica that is used to provide thickening, thixotropic (shear-thinning) and anti-settling behavior in liquid systems. It is most efficient in non-polar to medium polarity systems. It can be used for the reinforcement of silicone rubber and organic rubbers.
A high-surface area, high-structure fumed silica designed specifically for liquid silicone rubber (LSR) formulations that require elevated mechanical properties coupled with a high level of transparency.
